A quarter of a century on, a city – and a country – keep 9/11 memory alive

Walking around the streets near the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial this cloudy morning, I was struck by just how many people had gathered – 25 years later – to commemorate the attacks.

As someone who grew up in southern California and was in second grade in 2001, I had never experienced the kind of mass reverence that accompanies 9/11 until I moved to New York City. And even seven years into living here, seeing so many people come together to honour this tragedy still moves me.

Downtown Manhattan was eerily quiet this morning, despite the hundreds of people grouped in parks, on sidewalks, in courtyards, and around police barricades.

Some had come from around the country and the world to participate in the 25th anniversary. Others came from nearby to honour their loved ones lost in the attacks.

One man I spoke to, who lived in New York at the time of the attacks, burst into tears while trying to answer one of my questions, motioning to me that he couldn’t go on talking.

In ceremonies across the US, a nation gathers to remember 11 September

By this time 25 years ago, both of the Twin Towers had fallen, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon, and a fourth plane had crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

Memorials have been taking place throughout the day at all three of these sites. Here’s how the day has unfolded:

• A ceremony in New York City at the former site of the World Trade Center began today’s memorials in the US. Family members of victims were heard reading out the names of the more than 2,700 people that died in the city on 11 September 2001
• Seven bells were rung. Four to commemorate each plane strike, two to mark the collapse of each tower, and one – new this year – to honour those who have died of 9/11 related illnesses since
• At a separate Pentagon ceremony, President Trump spoke, saying “we will never, ever forget” as he went on to link the war with Iran to the events of 9/11
• “There are still enemies who hate us. Every day, enemies plot to curb our power and kill our citizens, including from Islamic terrorists abroad and at home. But we are ever vigilant,” the president said
• Later in the day, a memorial was held in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where hijacked Flight 93 crashed in a field after passengers attempted to take back control of the plane

OpenAI May Slow Down On Cutting-Edge AI, Sam Altman Told Employees: Report

In a company-wide meeting this week, Altman told employees that OpenAI could potentially pace its AI development – perhaps in conjunction with several other AI labs, but that some may not agree to do so, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the details are private.

In recent weeks, employees of leading AI firms have raised public concerns about the increased risks of advanced AI systems, fueling anxiety inside these companies. Both OpenAI and its rival Anthropic PBC have filed confidential paperwork to go public earlier this year.

OpenAI declined to comment.

The company’s top scientist, Jakub Pachocki, recently wrote a post warning about the dangers of AI and said that he believes AI companies should be “coordinating to slow down future development as needed.” Pachocki added that he hopes “for voluntary slowdowns to become commonplace until shared safety bars are established.”

IRGC hails Houthi advance as ‘divine triumph’

Iran’s IRGC has congratulated the Houthis for their seizure of the Red Sea coast.

The Houthis’ advance represents a “divine triumph and the fruit of years of steadfastness in the most difficult of battlefields”, IRGC spokesman Sardar Mohebi wrote on X.

Iranian officials have lavished praise on the Houthis over the past day, with Mohammad Mokhber, adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, saying that “the homegrown resolve of the resistance have driven the US and its allies into a tactical and strategic impasse”.

Perim Island, Yemen —  Stepping on to the Yemeni island of Perim is to relive history.

Its barren sand and rock moonscape feels for all the world like the land that time forgot. Its location, however, has put it at the heart of a very modern conflict.

For Perim Island sits in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab, a geopolitical pinch-point that’s taken on an outsized importance since US President Donald Trump’s war with Iran effectively shuttered the Strait of Hormuz.

To help keep global energy supplies flowing, and prices down, Saudi Arabia diverted its oil exports from Hormuz to the Red Sea.

But now Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Iran’s most powerful regional proxy, have begun an offensive that could land them control of Perim – and with it the ability to prevent ships passing through this narrow gateway from the Red Sea.

On Thursday the Houthis captured the town of Mocha, a crucial coastal location some 50 miles to the north of Perim.

On a recent day, an honor guard of Yemeni troops, patiently shuffling in the scorching sun, watched while a weathered officer’s outstretched hand helped arrivals to Perim off an aging gunboat. A CNN crew was among them, granted exclusive access to this dusty outpost.

Houthi fighters capture strategic island

Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Friday captured Perim Island in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a key global shipping lane. The island’s seizure came a day after the rebels took the Red Sea port city of Mocha.

Iran’s effective control of the Strait of Hormuz plus its tightening grip on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait threatens to push oil prices even higher, weeks before November’s midterm elections in the United States.

While the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the gateway to the Suez Canal shipping route, is less critical to global energy markets than Hormuz, it still carries essential goods worldwide, including millions of barrels of oil every day. The strait has become increasingly important since the start of the Iran war, as Saudi Arabia has re-routed some exports through the waterway to bypass Hormuz.

Viking Age silver cache discovered in Finland with metal detector by amateur archaeologist

An amateur archaeologist identified the location of a hoard of thousands of silver coins from the Viking Age in a Finnish town while scouring the area with his metal detector, according to museum officials.

Kalle Lappinen discovered the silver spot in Sysmä, Finland, on Sept. 3, leading archaeologists to retrieve almost 10 pounds of silver the next day, according to a Lahti Museums press release, which helped lead retrieval efforts.

Lahti Museums said this was the largest coin cache discovery in Finland from the Late Iron Age.

The tranche included many silver coins, as well as a silver bracelet, silver fragment, silver clasp and silver bead, according to the press release.

The treasure was buried in two different birch bark containers about 18 inches below the ground and about 40 feet apart, Esko Tikkala, the archaeologist who carried out the inspection, told ABC News.
