When Will PlayStation 6 Launch? New Leak Points to 2027–2028 Release Window

A new report suggests that the next-generation gaming console from Sony, the highly anticipated PlayStation 6, could launch in 2027 or early 2028, despite recent rumors claiming the console might be delayed until 2029.

According to popular tech leaker Tom Henderson from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead, Sony is unlikely to delay the release of its next console for too long because doing so would create higher production costs and disrupt its long-established console release cycle.

Historically, Sony has followed a 7-year console lifecycle. The PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, which means a next-generation upgrade around 2027 would align perfectly with the company’s traditional schedule.

Even though there have been concerns about rising RAM and storage prices, the leaker believes Sony will still move forward with the planned launch window rather than postpone the console.

Reports suggest the upcoming PlayStation 6 will use a custom APU developed by AMD. The chip is expected to be manufactured using advanced 3nm technology from TSMC, which could deliver major improvements in performance and efficiency compared to the current console generation.

The leak also claims Sony has already invested millions of dollars in development and manufacturing agreements with AMD and TSMC. Some internal production documents reportedly reference Q2 2027 as a key timeline for manufacturing, making a major delay unlikely.

If Sony postpones the console too far, it risks losing its allocated 3nm chip manufacturing capacity, which could push the project even further into the future. Because of this, analysts believe Sony would prefer to launch the console slightly more expensive rather than delay it for years.

Based on the latest information from insiders, the likely release window looks like this:

  • Late 2027 – Most likely launch window
  • Early 2028 – Possible short delay (around 6 months)
  • 2029 – Very unlikely scenario

Industry sources also expect RAM prices to stabilize by late 2026, which could help Sony finalize its launch strategy.

It’s also worth noting that Sony successfully launched the PlayStation 5 during the global COVID-19 pandemic, when supply chains and semiconductor production were under significant pressure. Despite those challenges, the console still arrived on schedule in 2020.

Because of that precedent, many analysts believe Sony will push forward with the PlayStation 6 launch rather than delaying it for several years.

While Sony has not officially confirmed any release plans yet, leaks strongly suggest that the PlayStation 6 could arrive around 2027 or early 2028. If the reports prove accurate, the next PlayStation generation may deliver massive performance upgrades, new AMD-powered hardware, and advanced 3nm chip technology, making it one of the biggest gaming launches of the decade.
