After running a travel blog for 15 years, I’ve learned a thing or two about planning trips. Comfortable and Memorable Whether they’re solo adventures or vacations for the whole family, I’ve planned a little bit of everything over the years.
So, with the travel season nearly upon us, I thought I’d finally sit down and write a post filled with all my tips on how to plan an awesome trip.
I’ll admit that I often take for granted the fact that I’ve been planning trips for myself and my loved ones for 12+ years now. It’s so natural for me to open up a few tabs to search for flights and hotels and find cool things to do that I forget how daunting the travel-planning process can sometimes be for others.
If you’re a bit rusty at planning trips (or maybe have just always been too intimidated to do it all yourself in the past), then this post is for you! I’ll cover all the things you need to do to plan your own independent travel.
I’m going to start with the sorts of questions you need to ask yourself in order to decide when and where to travel, and then take you through the whole trip planning process in the order that I recommend doing it.
By the end, hopefully you’ll be ready to plan a trip that you’ll love!
Consider your travel style

Before you even decide on any other details like where you want to go and when, you first should think about what *kind* of trip you want to plan.
This might be influenced by your travel style, or what you ultimately want For example, are you a budget-traveler looking for an affordable getaway, or do you want to go all-out on a luxury holiday? Do you want to travel solo, or with a friend, or is this going to be a family trip? Are you picturing yourself enjoying a slow-paced getaway, or are you a pack-it-all-in type of travelerto get out of your vacation.
There are no right or wrong answers, as everyone enjoys travel differently. But the answers to these questions will influence everything else about your trip planning, which is why you should tackle these basics first.
Set reasonable expectations
“Expectations share your experience. And I find a lot of people put pressure on themselves to enjoy their vacation because it’s the only one they have,” Dr. Albers reflects.
That makes every little thing about your experiences — and what you take away from them — feel more important than it really is.
If you’re using your time off to travel, Dr. Albers recommends that you do your research. Talking to friends, family or travel experts who’ve been there. They can share their experiences and help you get a sense of what’s actually possible.
Beware the comparison trap

Social media can be part of the reason our vacation expectations get so high. If you aren’t moved to tears at Machu Picchu, you may wonder if you’ve done something wrong. If you don’t have the trendiest camping equipment or can’t afford to take more than a couple days off, it can feel like you’re missing out. If you don’t do anything worthy of a selfie during your staycation, was it even fun?!
Remember: Those pictures and videos of your dream destination are curated to look as exciting, relaxing and unforgettable as possible.
There’s no such thing as a perfect vacation. And perfectionism is relaxation’s worst enemy. So, try to be gentle with yourself when things don’t go exactly according to plan.
. Relax your way
Before you start planning an itinerary, ask yourself: What does relaxation mean to me?
“Everybody defines it differently,” Dr. Albers notes. “Some people find being active to be soothing, while others relax by being still. Either way, building fresh air and green space into your plan is a good idea. Being in nature can be really good for your mood.”
Consider a Plan B

plan for the worst hope for the best’. You are all set for your much awaited trip. You look in the bag- passport check, Id check, tickets check and all of a sudden you get an email saying ‘your flight is in delay’…. sounds like a wreck of all plans!! isn’t it? It is obvious that these things are no surprise. According to Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in 2023, 21.32% flights got delayed and 1.65% got cancelled which means thousands of plans got ruined too. How would you manage that situation? Have you thought about any backup plan for it? Well, if you haven’t, now is the time!
Determine Your Travel Budget.
The first step in planning a vacation is determining your travel budget, including how much money you want to spend on your trip (e.g., will you use local currency for money, a travel credit card to rack up points towards a future flight or hotel, etc.). Organize your budget in your planner to outline your financial plan so you don’t spend more money on vacation than you’d like.
Consider all potential costs, including how many people you’re traveling with, flights, rental cars (for getting around at your destination or for a road trip), accommodations, meals, activities, and souvenirs. Having a clear budget helps prevent overspending and ensures you have enough money to cover all your travel expenses. Make sure to account for extra expenses like travel insurance and tips (so many people forget to work the added cost of tips into the budget; they can certainly add up!).
Choose Your Destination.

The next step in planning a vacation is to choose your destination. Research different locations and consider factors such as the best place and best time of year to visit, weather conditions, and local attractions. Paper planners are the best way to plan a trip and keep track of all the information you gather about potential destinations. Create a list of pros and cons for each option to make an informed decision. Use the notes section to jot down any recommendations from friends, travel blogs, travel magazine articles, or social media. Having all this information in one place will make it easier to finalize your destination choice.
Find Your Destination
The first thing you will need to decide upon, when planning your trip, is what destination do you want to visit? A European tour where it’s hot with lots of culture, or maybe a cooler climate where you may be on the hunt for your heritage, like on a Scottish tour, either sounds like lots of fun to us.
If you’re unsure of a destination, or maybe you have too many to choose from, a good way to help narrow down your list is to consider the time of year you’re planning on visiting the location.
Worldwide, peak travel times are often during the summer months (May – September). The sun is hotter, the sea is warmer, and if travelling as a family, the kids have an extended summer holiday period. However, depending on your chosen location, a fall tour or even a winter trip may prove to be popular for the masses. Less crowds, autumnal colours painting the landscape, and an excuse to wrap up warm in front of an open log fire at the local pub… the choice is really yours to make. One thing you may have to take into consideration if deciding on out of peak travel times, is that you may find certain excursions or attractions closed, so always best to check before you go.
Decide The Length of Your Trip

You have the location secured, your next step is to plan how long your trip is going to be. If you’re solo travelling, you may be lucky to have an extended period of time to explore all of the hidden paths your destination has to offer. For those with a shorter time frame, there’s still plenty a destination can offer, you just need to know how to plan your time to fit everything in. With our selection of UK and Ireland tours, we have a length of stay to suit all travellers. This flexibility means you can tour England for a weekend, followed by a week-long trip around Italy and Switzerland, seeing a multitude of cultures along the way.
. Book Flights & Travel Accommodations
Destination, check. Length of stay decided, check. Let’s start thinking about how you’re going to get to your chosen location and your travel accommodation. Flights, ferries, car, bus, or taxi, travelling has never been an easier commute. Depending on where your starting point is, more often than not, a flight may be the first logical step when planning your trip.
With many sources telling you tips and tricks to booking a cheap flight, such as “only book on a Tuesday in a private browser mode”, “look to book exactly 60 days before the day you want to fly” etc, it can be conflicting in what they suggest. From our experience, the cost of flights only increases as we get close to our chosen date of flying. With that in mind, we have several guides to help if looking for direct flights from the US:
